Alex Biega (born April 4, 1988 in Montréal , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League since October 2019 and plays there in the position of defender . His younger brother Danny Biega was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Biega was selected directly from the Salisbury School , a high school in Connecticut , for which he played between 2004 and 2006, by the Buffalo Sabers of the National Hockey League in the fifth round in 147th place of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft . The defender then studied for four years until the summer of 2010 at Harvard University and played parallel to this for the university team in ECAC hockey , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time, Biega was appointed to numerous selection teams and led the team on the ice as team captain in his final year of college .
After finishing his college career, the defender was finally taken for two years by the Buffalo Sabers in May 2010. Despite a temporary extension of the employment relationship in the summer of 2012 by one year, Biega did not play a game in the Sabers jersey. Instead, he ran in the 2010/11 season for Buffalo's farm team Portland Pirates , and after they had changed their cooperation partner for two years for the Rochester Americans - also in the AHL. After his contract expired, the defensive player switched to the Vancouver Canucks franchise as a free agent . Although he was mostly there for the farm team Utica Comets for points in the following two seasons , Biega made his NHL debut for the Canadians in February 2015 during the 2014/15 season . With the beginning of the 2015/16 season , he finally got a regular place in the NHL squad and played 51 season games.
In October 2019, after more than six years in the Canucks organization, Biega was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings , while David Pope moved to Vancouver in return .
International
Biega represented his home country in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2005 , in which he led the team from the province of Québec as team captain. The team finished the tournament far from the medal ranks in ninth place. In five missions, the defender remained pointless.
