Jonathan Ericsson (born March 2, 1984 in Karlskrona ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League since 2006 . With the Swedish national team , the defender won the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics . His father Sven Eriksson was and his older brother Jimmie Ericsson is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Jonathan Ericsson began his career in 2001 as a striker for HC Vita Hästen's junior team , but soon switched to the position of defender. After his first season he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Entry Draft 2002 in the ninth round at position 291. He was the last player of this year to be drafted . In the 2002/03 season he then played for the senior team of Vita Hästen in the third-class Division 1 before moving to Södertälje SK . For Södertälje he initially played in the highest junior league in Sweden, but was then increasingly used for the professionals in the Elitserien .
In the seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06 Ericsson played in addition to his assignments at Södertälje also in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan at Huddinge IK and Almtuna IS . Ericsson showed only limited skills, especially on the offensive, and had only scored once in 81 Elitserien games and not prepared a single goal. Nevertheless, he was brought to North America in the summer of 2006, where he should play for the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings, in the AHL .
He was able to establish himself in the Griffins team without any problems and was an important player in the team's defense. He also developed significantly on the offensive and was together with Derek Meech , who also collected 29 scorer points, the team's best defender.
In the 2007/08 season he confirmed the previous year's performance, which is why he was invited to the AHL All-Star Classic . The Detroit Red Wings first called him to the NHL squad in February 2008 when several defenders were out and he made his debut on February 22nd against the Calgary Flames . In total, Ericsson played eight NHL games and scored one goal. His AHL season he had to end in April because the Griffins missed the playoffs, but he was able to improve with ten goals and 24 assists compared to the previous season and was one of the pillars of the team.
In the fall of 2008, Detroit head coach Mike Babcock declared that Ericsson was ready for the NHL, but he was not given a place in the Red Wings squad due to the large number of defenders. Instead, he played another season at Grand Rapids and was named one of the team's alternate captains. After the very convincing previous season, however, Ericsson struggled to meet expectations. Especially on the offensive and in the majority game, he could not play his skills and remained without a hit until a several-week injury break in December 2008. After that he showed much more constant performance, but was thrown back again by another injury in February 2009. Shortly after the injury break, the Detroit Red Wings appointed him to the NHL squad, where he replaced the injured Andreas Lilja . With Lilja's recovery process showing no rapid progress, Ericsson stayed in Detroit for the remainder of the regular season and was also part of the regular squad in the playoffs. In the course of the following years Ericsson established himself in the NHL squad of the Red Wings.
Jonathan Ericsson is primarily seen as a defender who, due to his height, prefers physical play and has his strength on the defensive, but has also been able to set accents on the offensive since his move to North America.
