Derek Meech (born April 21, 1984 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey defender who was under contract with the Malmö Redhawks in the Svenska Hockeyligan since May 2015 .
Career
Derek Meech began his career during the 1999/2000 season with the Red Deer Rebels in the Canadian Junior League WHL , where he was used five times. From the 2000/01 season he was part of the Rebels' regular team. Meech played his role as a defender very defensively and only had two goals and nine assists in 60 games, but the season was crowned with success. After the Rebels won the WHL playoffs , they also won the Canadian Junior Championship for the Memorial Cup .
In his second year, Meech was able to improve significantly and also set more aggressively. At the end of the season, in which the Rebels only failed in the final of the WHL playoffs, he had the team's best plus / minus value with +35 and was seventh a few months later by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft Lap selected at position 229. He stayed with the Red Deer Rebels for the time being.
In the 2002/03 season Meech was able to repeat his performances from the previous season and the team again reached the final of the playoffs, but he missed several games of the finals due to a broken jaw. At the side of Dion Phaneuf he played in a defensive line during the 2003/04 season and led the Rebels as team captain . He played his best year, scoring 38 points in 62 games. In addition, he showed his class with four goals and seven assists in the playoffs, but this time they failed in the semifinals. In the course of the season he was appointed to the Canadian U20 national team and took part in the Junior World Cup, where he won the silver medal.
In the summer of 2004 he moved to the pros and got a place in the squad of the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings in the AHL . Meech had a difficult start to his first professional season, but was then able to establish himself in the team. After an average second year, he was finally one of the permanent sizes in the team in the 2006/07 season and was appointed to the Red Wings NHL squad for the first time in December 2006 , where he made four appearances. His good performances also earned him participation in the AHL All-Star Classic in January 2007. At the end of the season he was together with Jonathan Ericsson , who had also scored 29 points, the best defender at the Grand Rapids Griffins.
In August 2007, Meech received a three-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings and was able to recommend himself a month later in the training camp for a place in the NHL squad. However, it was only used occasionally when one of the six regular defenders was injured or needed a break. In March 2008 Meech had to play in attack from time to time, as several strikers were injured and finally ended the season with a total of 32 missions. In the playoffs, when the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup , he was no longer used. Since he had not played enough games for his name to be engraved on the Stanley Cup, the Red Wings applied for a waiver, which was eventually approved.
On July 1, 2011, Meech signed a contract with the Winnipeg Jets . However, he was injured only two games after the start of the season and was out for most of the 2011/12 season . Only in the play-offs did he make his comeback in the AHL for the St. John's IceCaps , the Jets farm team.
In July 2013, the defender from HK Dinamo Minsk was taken out of the Continental Hockey League for one year, but in November of the same year dismissed from the contract due to an injury. In early January 2014, Meech received a contract until the end of the season from the AHL franchise of the Texas Stars , with whom he won the playoffs and thus the Calder Cup at the end of the season . As a result, the stars extended his contract for another year before moving to Sweden to the Malmö Redhawks after the 2015/16 season.
Derek Meech is regarded as a defender with good all-round skills, who can be used in power play as well as in outnumbered situations, but with a height of 1.80 meters he is one of the smaller players in his position.
