Donald Hamilton "Don" McKenney (born April 30, 1934 in Smiths Falls ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (center) who worked for the Boston Bruins , New York Rangers , Toronto Maple Leafs , Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis from 1954 to 1968 Blues played in the National Hockey League .

Career

McKenney played with the Barrie Flyers of the Ontario Hockey Association during his junior years with Doug Mohns and Don Cherry . He gained his first experience in the senior sector in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears , for which he played one season.

From the 1954/55 season he played for the Boston Bruins . Thanks to his elegant running style and skillful handling of the stick, he secured a regular place. In the second half of the 1950s he was one of the best scorers of the Bruins and made it into the top ten scorers of the NHL four times in a row. Since he received hardly any penalties, he was awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 1960 .

During the 1962/63 season he was given to the New York Rangers for Dean Prentice . His time with the Rangers was short, as in the course of the following season he and Andy Bathgate won the Toronto Maple Leafs . With the Maple Leafs he won the Stanley Cup at the end of the season . The following year, the Leafs sent him to the Rochester Americans for a few games in the AHL . After the end of the season, the Leafs separated from him and gave him to the Detroit Red Wings .

He played only 24 games in two years for Detroit, mostly he was with the Pittsburgh Hornets in the AHL. In the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft , the St. Louis Blues got him . Here, too, he had to join the farm team again and again , to the Kansas City Blues in the Central Professional Hockey League . In the playoffs he was in the squad in the first few games and was able to contribute a goal and an assist in the series against the Philadelphia Flyers . The team reached the final series, but, as expected, lost to the Montréal Canadiens . He played with the Providence Reds in the AHL for the next two years before retiring from his career.

From 1970 he was an assistant coach for Northeastern University in Boston behind the gang. He stayed with the team for many years and was head coach from 1989 to 1991.
