Dean Sutherland Prentice (born October 5, 1932 in Schumacher , Ontario ; † November 2, 2019 in Cambridge , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 1432 games for New York between 1950 and 1977 Rangers , Boston Bruins , Detroit Red Wings , Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League on the position of left winger . Prentice, who took part in the NHL All-Star Game five times , was a member of the NHL Second All-Star Team in 1960 . His brother Eric was also a professional ice hockey player and his nephew Jim is a politician.
Career
Dean Prentice began his career as a hockey player with the Guelph Biltmores , for which he was active from 1950 to 1952 in the Ontario Hockey Association and with whom he won the triple consisting of the J. Ross Robertson Cup , George Richardson Memorial Trophy and Memorial Cup in 1952 .
After he began the 1952/53 season with the Biltmores, he was signed by the New York Rangers , for which he was on the ice for the following eleven years in the National Hockey League , before he was in the 1962/63 season in exchange for Don McKenney and Dick Meissner was given to the Boston Bruins . He missed much of the 1964/65 season due to a back injury. In his career, the attacker was also under contract for three years with the Detroit Red Wings , two with the Pittsburgh Penguins and again three years with the Minnesota North Stars , with whom he ended his NHL career in 1974 at the age of 41. Following his active career, Prentice took over in the 1974/75 season as head coach of the New Haven Nighthawks , with whom he was defeated by the Springfield Indians in the final of the Calder Cup with 1: 4 wins. In the 1976/77 season, the Canadian played again as a player-coach for the Traverse City Bays from the United States Hockey League , before he finally stopped playing ice hockey.
Prentice died in Cambridge, Ontario, his home province , in November 2019 at the age of 87 .
