Douglas Allen "Doug" Mohns (born December 13, 1933 in Capreol , Ontario ; † February 7, 2014 in Reading , Massachusetts ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who, in the course of his active career between 1950 and 1975, among other things, 1484 games for the Boston Bruins , Chicago Black Hawks , Minnesota North Stars , Atlanta Flames and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Mohns, who spent 22 years in the NHL and was the first team captain in the history of the Washington Capitals franchise , took part in the NHL All-Star Game seven times .
Career
Doug Mohns began his career as a hockey player with the Barrie Flyers , for which he was active from 1950 to 1953 in the Ontario Hockey Association and with whom he won the Memorial Cup in 1951 and 1953, respectively .
Then the defender received a contract with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League , for which he was the next eleven years on the ice before it on June 8, 1964 in exchange for Reg Fleming and Ab McDonald to the Chicago Blackhawks was given . For Chicago Mohns played another seven years in the NHL, before he was transferred to the Minnesota North Stars during the 1970/71 season with Terry Caffery and in exchange for Danny O'Shea , for which he played until 1973. During his time in Minnesota, he took part in an NHL All-Star Game in 1972 for the seventh and last time in his career . After a year with the Atlanta Flames , they sold him before the 1974/75 season to the newly founded franchise Washington Capitals , whose first captain he was before ending his career after 22 seasons in the NHL in 1975 at the age of 42.
Mohns died in February 2014 at the age of 80 from complications from myelodysplastic syndrome in Reading , Massachusetts .
