Brendan Witt (* 20th February 1975 in Humboldt , Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career between 1990 and 2010 among other 931 games for the Washington Capitals , Nashville Predators and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League on contested the position of defender . With the Washington Capitals, where Witt spent most of his career, he reached the finals of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1998 .
Career
The 1.88 m tall defender began his career with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League before he was selected in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft as eleventh in the first round by the Washington Capitals .
His first appearances in the National Hockey League for the capital city completed the Links shooter in the 1995/96 season , the following season he commuted the only time in his career between an AHL - farm team , in this case, the Portland Pirates , and the associated NHL - franchise . Since the 1997/98 season Witt was part of the regular team of the Capitals, whose assistant captain he was finally 2001 together with Steve Konowalchuk . After only one season, however, he lost this post again by a player vote.
In August 2005 Witt announced that he wanted to switch to a team with greater chances of winning the Stanley Cup , but on August 15 he extended his contract in Washington. On March 9, 2006, the Canadian was finally transferred to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Kris Beech and a first-round draft pick . During the lockout - 2004/05 completed Witt three games for the Bracknell Bees in the British National League , the then second highest British Hockey League.
On July 3, 2006, Witt signed a three-year contract with the New York Islanders , where he again held the post of assistant captain, this time together with Mike Sillinger . For the Islanders, the defender wore the number 32, a tribute to his role model and former teammate Dale Hunter . After the 2009/10 season , his ongoing contract was terminated by the Islanders and Witt paid off. The Canadian then ended his active career at the age of 35.
International
On an international level, Witt took part in the 1994 Junior World Cup in the Czech Republic with the Canadian U20 national team. The defender played all seven tournament games in which he remained pointless. Nevertheless, at the end of the tournament he celebrated winning the U20 world championship.
