The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1998 began on 22 April 1998 and ended on 16 June 1998 with a 4: 0 victory for the Detroit Red Wings against the Washington Capitals . The Red Wings thus won their second title in a row and the ninth in their franchise history . Furthermore, they found in the person of its captain Steve Yzerman to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the playoffs, who is also the scorer list of post-season led. The defeated Washington Capitals were in their first Stanley Cup final and were also the fourth team in a row to lose the final by a sweep . To date (as of the 2019 playoffs), the 1998 playoffs mark the last time a final ended in a sweep. The Pittsburgh Penguins only managed to defend their title in 2017 .

The Chicago Blackhawks missed the playoffs for the first time since 1969, so the second-longest run of 28 playoff appearances in a row came to an end; only one participation less than the 29-year-old and so far longest series of the Boston Bruins , which had only ended last year. Furthermore, for the first time in league history, both teams from New York ( Rangers and Islanders ) missed the post-season .

mode

After the two division winners from each conference as well as the six other teams with the highest points in the conference have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Detroit Red Wings traditionally had a total of 55 people, of which only 26 players and a few officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Assistant coaches Dave Lewis and Barry Smith and Scout Mark Howe were among the officials . The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions. Vladimir Konstantinov and masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov, who were critically injured in a car accident after the cup celebration last year and were unable to do their jobs, were engraved on the Stanley Cup as they were still considered part of the team. The 87-year-old Wally Crossman, who took care of the Wings equipment, was the oldest person to be immortalized on the Cup by then.

The 26 players in Detroit consist of two goalkeepers, nine defenders and 15 attackers. There were nine Europeans in the Red Wings squad , more than ever before with a Stanley Cup winner. Manny Legace was accidentally engraved as a legece. Larry Murphy , who had won the Stanley Cup twice with Pittsburgh in the early 1990s, was now successful with the Red Wings for the second time.
