Kevin Hodson (born March 27, 1972 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League .
Career
Kevin Hodson began his career in the Canadian Junior League OHL with Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds . He was never drafted , but signed a contract in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1992 as a so-called free agent , but he stayed for another year in the OHL, where he and his team won the Memorial Cup , the most important trophy in Canadian junior ice hockey , won. He was also named the best goalkeeper in the Memorial Cup tournament. He also played 14 games for the Indianapolis Ice , the Chicago farm team in the IHL .
After the season his contract in Chicago ran out and he got a new one with the Detroit Red Wings in the summer of 1993 . The following two seasons he played with the farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings , in the AHL . During the 1995/96 season he was part of the goalkeeping team of the Detroit Red Wings for the first time. On January 5, 1996, he played his first NHL game when he was substituted on halfway through the game for goalkeeper Chris Osgood and he conceded only one goal . The next day, Hodson played for the first time from the start and managed a shutout against the Chicago Blackhawks . At the end of the season he came on a total of four missions.
In 1996/97 he was number 3 behind Osgood and Mike Vernon in the Detroit Red Wings and played a total of six times. The Red Wings celebrated their first Stanley Cup victory in 42 years this year , but Hodson's name was not engraved on the Stanley Cup because he had not reached the minimum number of games played.
But he made up for that in 1997/98 . Again the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup and after the departure of Mike Vernon, Hodson rose to the number 2 goalie of the season. But the following year he lost his position as a back-up gala to Norm Maracle and Hodson was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning in May 1999 . After a rather poor performance in the previous games in the season for Detroit, he showed equally good performance in Tampa Bay, but was incapacitated after a few appearances for the rest of the season by a groin strain .
In the 1999/2000 season he was Dan Cloutier's back-up goalie . Both played together in the OHL for Sault Ste. Marie, where Kevin Hodson was number 1. Hodson could not convince with his performances. He only managed two wins in 24 games and had both a poor catch rate and a poor conceding average. After the season he was transferred to the Montréal Canadiens , where he was not allowed to play for the NHL team or for the farm team.
He didn’t play an ice hockey game until 2002 and no longer had a contract with a team. In the summer of 2002, the Tampa Bay Lightning signed him again, but again he could not convince because he could not win any of seven games. Tampa Bay signed John Grahame as the new number 2 on January 13, 2003, and three days later, Hodson announced his retirement.
But on November 6, 2003 he received a contract in the Finnish SM Liiga with Jokerit . There he performed well and made a win, a difference and a loss in three games. He also had a good catch quota and was able to book a shutout. However, he left the team after these three games and ended his career for good.
Others
- In the 1997/98 season, Hodson came to his only use in the playoffs of the NHL. However, Hodson was only 73 seconds on the ice and never got a shot on goal.
