John Gillies Mark Grahame (born August 31, 1975 in Denver , Colorado ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper and coach who played 230 games for the Boston Bruins Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes between 1993 and 2011 competed in the National Hockey League . With the Tampa Bay Lightning, Grahame won the Stanley Cup in 2004 .

Career

John Grahame was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1994 by the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League in the ninth round at position 229. Grahame then played three years for Lake Superior State University in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , before joining the Boston Bruins farm team , the Providence Bruins , in the American Hockey League in 1997 . There he played for two years as a goalkeeper and won the Calder Cup in 1999 . He also played for Providence for the next two years, but now he was also used in the NHL for Boston, but could not prevail.

In January 2003, Grahame was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning , where he was back-up goalie behind Nikolai Chabibulin . In the 2003/04 season he was able to win the Stanley Cup with the Lightning . In the play-offs he only had a playing time of 34 minutes.

After the 2004/05 season was canceled because of the lockout , he was number 1 in Tampa in the 2005/06 season , as Nikolai Chabibulin had left the team. Grahame reached the play-offs with the team, but had to admit defeat to the Ottawa Senators in the first round . After the season, the contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning expired and Grahame signed a two-year deal with the newly minted Stanley Cup winner Carolina Hurricanes . There he formed the goalkeeping team with Cam Ward for a year and a half, but was then sent to the Albany River Rats in the AHL after poor performance .

In May 2008, Grahame moved to Russia for HK Awangard Omsk in the Continental Hockey League . However, his contract was terminated in December 2008 because Grahame was accused of being addicted to alcohol. In January he appealed against his termination, but failed. Since then, Grahame has been without a contract. In December 2009, the Philadelphia Flyers signed him before he - after only twelve games - moved to the Colorado Avalanche in March 2010 . In both teams he was used in the farm team. After the end of the 2010/11 season , the goalkeeper ended his active career.

Grahame then worked for two seasons until the summer of 2013 for the Sioux City Musketeers from the United States Hockey League as a goalkeeping coach. For the junior team, the American himself stood in the gate during his junior years.

International

Grahame represented his home country in the junior division at the Junior World Cup in 1995 , before he was appointed to the squad of the men's selection for the first time the following year. With the US team, the goalkeeper won the bronze medal at the 1996 World Cup . Grahame also appeared in the US jersey at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and the 2007 World Cup .

family

John Grahame 's father, Ron Grahame , was also a professional ice hockey goalkeeper. From 1974 to 1981 he played in the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Association , where he was named twice as best goalkeeper and once as most valuable player in the playoffs .

His mother, Charlotte, served as Executive Director of Hockey Administration at Colorado Avalanche from 1995 to 2011 and her name was engraved on the trophy as part of the Avalanche's Stanley Cup win at the end of the 2001 Stanley Cup playoffs . This makes the two of them the only mother-son combination whose name is immortalized on the Stanley Cup.
