The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1999 began on 21 April 1999 and ended on 19 June 1999 with a 4: 2 victory of the Dallas Stars over the Buffalo Sabers . For the Stars it was the third final participation in the franchise history , but the first since the team moved from Minnesota in 1993. The North Stars had reached the final in 1981 and 1991, but were inferior in each case, so that Dallas now won the first title. In addition, the Stars featured in the person of Joe Nieuwendyk to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning MVP of the playoffs. Buffalo, on the other hand, suffered the second defeat in his second Stanley Cup final after 1975.

The post-season scorer list was headed by Peter Forsberg from the Colorado Avalanche , although he and his team had already been eliminated in the conference finals. The last time Doug Gilmour and Bernie Federko achieved this was in 1986 for the St. Louis Blues ; Forsberg himself, however, again in the 2002 playoffs .

mode

After the three division winners and the five other most points teams have qualified the Conference of each conference, start the knock-out system discharged playoffs . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Dallas Stars traditionally had a total of 47 people, including 25 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Among these was Doug Jarvis as assistant coach , who has already won the Stanley Cup four times as a player. The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions. Brent Severyn , who had only played 30 games due to injury, benefited from one of these . No exception was made for Doug Lidster and Brad Lukowich . Both also defended in the playoffs for the stars.

The stars' 25 players are made up of two goalkeepers, seven defenders and 16 attackers, including three Europeans : Jere Lehtinen, Roman Turek and Sergei Subow . The stars' last participation in the final was before the team moved from Minnesota in 1991. Mike Modano and Shawn Chambers were two players in the squad who were already part of the team.
