After which Detroit Red Wings in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft in the third round to 50th place had secured the rights to his person, he played a successful year in Guelph. In the meantime, Gary Roberts had joined the team with which they could win the Memorial Cup as the best Canadian junior team . Chiasson was voted best player in the finals .
After two years, in which he also shuttled between the farm team and the National Hockey League as a supplementary player , he finally managed to establish himself with the Red Wings in the 1988/89 season . The urgent need for a strong goalkeeper made it necessary for the Red Wings to agree to an exchange deal with the Calgary Flames that took Mike Vernon to Detroit and sent Chiasson to Canada.
After two and a half years in Calgary, he moved to the Hartford Whalers , who missed the playoffs in the 1996/97 season. He was able to represent his home country at the 1997 ice hockey world championship and win the title with the Canadian national team. For the following season 1997/98 his team moved south and played from then on as the Carolina Hurricanes . Chiasson was a support on the defensive of the canes.
Immediately after leaving the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1999 against the Boston Bruins , the team celebrated the end of the season with teammate Gary Roberts . Chiasson left the party drunk and was killed in a traffic accident on the way home. Since then, no Hurricanes player has worn the number 3 jersey, even if the number has not been officially banned. In addition, the Hurricanes award the Steve Chiasson Award within the team , which the player with the greatest determination and dedication receives during the season.
