Career

Desjardins played during his junior years with Pierre Turgeon for the Bisons de Granby in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In 1988 he was junior world champion with the Canadian team.

The Canadiens de Montréal selected him in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as 38th. He stayed in Granby for a year and played seven games in the American Hockey League with the Canadiens de Sherbrooke at the end of the season .

In the 1988/89 season he was allowed to play 13 regular season games in the NHL with Montreal. In the playoffs he came with his team in the finals, but there the Canadiens were subject to the Calgary Flames . In the years to come, he became the Canadiens' best offensive defender. When Montreal won the Stanley Cup at the end of the 1992/93 season , he had his big appearance in the second game of the final series. He single-handedly defeated the Los Angeles Kings to Wayne Gretzky , in which he scored all three goals in a 3-2 in extra time.

In the 1994/95 season shortened due to the strike , he was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers after nine games with the Canadiens . With him the Canadiens gave Gilbert Dionne and John LeClair to the Flyers to bring Mark Recchi to Montreal.

In Philadelphia, the Legion of Doom was formed with LeClair around Eric Lindros . The team, which consisted almost exclusively of tall players, reached the finals of the Stanley Cup in the 1996/97 season , but the Detroit Red Wings were playfully too strong for the Flyers.

For the Canadian national team he played at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano after a defeat against Finland they missed the bronze medal here.

The 1999/2000 season brought him his best statistical values to date with 14 goals and 41 assists. From the 2002/03 season he was plagued by injuries and he could not play more than 50 games in any season. He announced his resignation on August 10, 2006. In July 2008 the Flyers took him on to their coaching staff.
