In April 2005 he was named by the Flyers in the roster of the Philadelphia Phantoms farm team in the American Hockey League and won the Calder Cup with the team . In October 2005, Richards made his debut with the Flyers in the top division of North America and was able to record the first NHL goal in the game against the New York Rangers . In February 2006, he succeeded in the game against the New York Islanders , the first hat trick of his NHL career, the Canadian finished his rookie - season 2005/06 with 32 scorer points and was chosen for its services from the Canadian Association for Assistance captain of the team for the A- 2006 World Championship appointed. The following year , Richards missed a third of the season due to gastric surgery and only got 32 scorer points from 59 games. In the 2007/08 season, the attacker established himself as a top performer in the Flyers' squad and received a 12-year contract extension in December 2007 with a reported total salary of around 69 million US dollars. Then Richards first took part in the All-Star Game and scored one assist. He finished the main round with a total of 28 goals and 47 assists, making him the player with the highest points in the Flyers team.

Shortly before the start of the 2008/09 season , Richards was named as the successor to Jason Smith as the new captain of the Philadelphia Flyers. In February 2009, he set a new NHL record when he scored twice in his career against the New York Rangers for the third time in his career. With a total of 80 scorer points, the Canadian played the best points season of his previous NHL career. In the course of the 2009/10 season , there was repeated speculation that several of the Flyers' actors - including Richards - had repeatedly attracted attention with excessive alcohol and partying. Richards then repeatedly complained publicly about the media coverage in Philadelphia and denied the allegations. At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games , he won the gold medal with the Canadian team and in the final match against the USA he made it 1-0. In the 2010 NHL playoffs, the attacker was significantly involved with 23 scorer points from 23 games in the Flyers' surprising final, but lost with the team in six games against the Chicago Blackhawks .

In the summer of 2015, his contract was terminated by the Kings because an investigation was opened against him for drug smuggling in Canada; the substance found was the pain reliever oxycodone . With the support of the NHLPA , he appealed against the termination of the contract, whereupon he agreed with the Kings in October 2015 on an arbitration, the exact contents of which were not published; however, the termination of the contract remains. The trial took place in Canada in February 2016 and ended with the criminal case being closed .
