Jason Matthew Smith (born November 2, 1973 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who played 1076 games for the New Jersey Devils , Toronto Maple Leafs , Edmonton Oilers during his playing career between 1993 and 2009 , Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators has played in the National Hockey League on the position of fullback . Smith, who was both team captain of the Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers, celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Albany River Council by winning the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League in 1995. After retiring, he worked as a coach.
Career
Jason Smith began his career as a hockey player with the Regina Pats , for which he was active in the Western Hockey League from 1990 to 1993 . During this time he was selected in the first round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 18th player by the New Jersey Devils , for whom he played in the National Hockey League from 1993 to 1997 . He also won the Calder Cup with their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Albany River Rats , in the 1994/95 season . On February 25, 1997, the defender of New Jersey was delivered to their league rivals Toronto Maple Leafs , for which the right-handed shooter ran up the following two and a half years before he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers towards the end of the 1998/99 season . With the Oilers he was defeated in the 2005/06 season in the Stanley Cup Finals the Carolina Hurricanes .
After eight years, Smith left the Oilers in the summer of 2007 to join the Philadelphia Flyers , for whom he was on the ice for a year before he was signed by the Ottawa Senators before the 2008-09 season . After the season he ended his career.
He continued his career with the Senators, working as a consultant on scouting and development issues from 2012 to 2014 before moving to the position of assistant coach under Dave Cameron in November 2014 . With Cameron, he was also released in April 2016. He was then head coach of the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League at the beginning of the 2016/17 season . After a little more than two years in office, he was released from his duties shortly after the start of the 2018/19 season in October 2018.

For Canada , Smith took part in the 1993 U20 World Junior Championship and the 2001 World Championship .

particularities
Smith had a supporting role in the movie Star Trek (2009) , in which he was allowed to take on the main character Captain Kirk in a short scene. Later in the film, Kirk was arrested by him.
