Gilbert Dionne (born September 19, 1970 in Drummondville , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who, during his active career, played for the Montréal Canadiens , Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League as well as the Krefeld Penguins and Hanover Scorpions has played in the German Ice Hockey League . His older brother is hockey Hall of Fame member Marcel Dionne .

Career

Gilbert Dionne played during his junior years from 1986 to 1988 for the Niagara Falls Canucks , before he went on the ice the following two seasons for the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League . In the 1989/90 season he reached the finals for the Memorial Cup with the Kitchener Rangers , in which the team was subject to the Oshawa Generals . Following he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1990 in the fourth round at position 81 by the Montréal Canadiens , for which Dionne made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1990/91 season . However, he spent almost the entire season on the farm team with the Fredericton Canadiens in the American Hockey League . There Dionne was the team's third-best scorer during the regular season with 87 points from 77 games.

In the following season he rose thanks to his good performance to a regular player in Montréal and was voted NHL rookie of the month in February 1992 . Another season later, Dionne prevailed with the Montréal Canadiens in the final games for the Stanley Cup against the Los Angeles Kings for Luc Robitaille and Wayne Gretzky and won the prestigious trophy in five games. The striker also spent the 1993/94 season in the Franco-Canadian franchise , confirming the performances from the previous season. Shortly after the start of the 1994/95 NHL season , which was shortened by the lockout , he was transferred to league rivals Philadelphia Flyers in February 1995 . Together with him, Éric Desjardins and John LeClair changed , while in return Mark Recchi and a third round suffrage in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft - with which the Austrian Martin Hohenberger was later selected - to the Canadiens. For the Flyers Dionne played only 25 games, as he was deleted from the squad shortly after the start of the 1995/96 season . The attacker then played for the Carolina Panthers in the American Hockey League before joining the Florida Panthers in January 1996 for the remainder of the season . He then ran for a year for the Carolina Monarchs in the AHL, before playing four years for the Cincinnati Cyclones in the International Hockey League .

In the summer of 2001, Dionne finally dared to sign his first contract with a European club. He played the 2001/02 season with the Krefeld Penguins in the German Ice Hockey League and was successful there with 41 points. The following game year he spent at their league rivals Hannover Scorpions , where he was able to increase his previous season's yield by another five points. From 2003 to 2006 he let his career end with the Cambridge Hornets in the OHA Senior Hockey League .
