Martin Hohenberger (born January 29, 1977 in Villach ) is a former Austrian ice hockey player and current coach , who has been the head coach of the ATSE Graz in the national ice hockey league since February 2011 . His brother Herbert Hohenberger is also a hockey player.

Career

As a 15-year-old, the talented Hohenberger went to Canada in 1993 and played in the Western Hockey League . His first team were the Victoria Cougars . The team moved and played as Prince George Cougars from 1994 . In the 1995 NHL Entry Draft , the Montreal Canadiens selected him in the third round as 74th. Within the WHL, a move to the Lethbridge Hurricanes followed . In the 1997/98 season he played some games for Montreal's AHL farm team, the Fredericton Canadiens , and in the East Coast Hockey League for the New Orleans Brass , but also in his home country for the Villacher SV . Another year followed with the New Orleans Brass before he finally returned to Europe.

Two years in Villach was followed by the 2001/02 season in the DEL for the Revierlöwen Oberhausen . He then returned to Austria and played for HC Innsbruck for four years , interrupted in the 2003/04 season by an engagement with the DEG Metro Stars , the Düsseldorf team in the DEL, which lasted only a few months . In the 2006/07 season he played in the Austrian Bundesliga for EHC Black Wings Linz , after which he moved back to HC Innsbruck. After Innsbruck's voluntary relegation to the National League after the 2008/09 season , he moved to the Graz 99ers , but did not play a game for his new club and in early summer 2010 announced his retirement from competitive sport.

For the 2010/11 season Hohenberger was hired as an assistant coach at ATSE Graz , but also played seven games for his new club in the national ice hockey league . In February 2011, he was promoted to head coach after Vesa Surenkin was fired.
