Herbert Hohenberger (born February 8, 1969 in Villach ) is a former Austrian ice hockey player and current coach and official. His brother Martin Hohenberger was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Herbert Hohenberger began playing ice hockey at Villacher SV and played for the Bundesliga team for the first time in 1985. A year later, the right-shooting defender went to the Canadian Junior League Québec Major Junior Hockey League . There he was active for two years for the Olympiques de Hull and won the Coupe du Président , the championship of the QMJHL , with the team in 1988 . After another year of engagement in his home country, the undrafted defender played overseas a second time.
For two years he played in the QMJHL, American Hockey League and International Hockey League for various teams. In the summer of 1991 Hohenberger returned to Austria and won two championships with the EC VSV in the following three years . Due to his enormous offensive strength, the Kölner Haie signed him in 1994 for a total of four years. In the 1994/95 season he also won the German championship with the KEC, and a year later he was runner-up with the Cologne team. From 1998 to 2007 he played again for his hometown club in Villach and won three other championships , only interrupted by a year with the Augsburger Panthers .
For the 2007/08 season Hohenberger signed a contract with HC Innsbruck and thus played for another Austrian team for the first time. After the 2009/10 season at HC Innsbruck, he ended his active career.
As a trainer
In the 2010/11 season he worked as an assistant coach for the U20 juniors at HC Innsbruck and as assistant general manager of the professional team. From 2011 he was initially the sports director of the ATSE Graz from the national league . From 2011 to 2012 he was assistant coach at the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , after which he switched to EC Graz 99ers as assistant coach in 2012 . He was also head coach of the Austrian U18 national team (2011-2013) and then assistant coach of the U20 national team (2013/14). In August 2015 he was presented as the new coach by EC Steindorf from Carinthia, but from October 2015 he took over EK Zell am See from the Inter-National League . At the end of July it was announced that Hohenberger would be the new coach of the Crocodiles Hamburg in the German Ice Hockey Oberliga Nord, succeeding Andris Bartkevics, who surprisingly resigned at the end of last season. Hohenberger turned down an offer to extend the contract in Hamburg after the end of the 2017/18 season and left the club.
For the 2018/19 season he became the head coach of another German league club, the Herner EV . In September 2018 Hohenberger's prostate cancer was diagnosed, he had to undergo an operation and was initially unable to exercise his position as a trainer in Herne.
In the 2019/2020 season he will return behind the gang as coach of the MEC Halle 04 Saale Bulls .
International
From 1989 to 2003 Hohenberger played almost every important tournament for the Austrian national team . He took part in a total of nine A and three B world championships . He also represented his home country at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer .
