Reşat Nuri Güntekin

Reşat Nuri Güntekin (* 1889 in Istanbul ; † December 7, 1956 in London ) was a Turkish novelist, writer of short stories and plays. Novels such as Çalıkuşu (1922) and Yaprak Dökümü (1939) achieved great success in Turkey, some of which were translated into other languages ​​and have been filmed several times to this day.

Life

In addition to his writing activities, Güntekin held numerous public offices. a. Turkish Member of Parliament and Chief Inspector of the State Ministry of Education.

The author died of lung cancer during treatment in London and is buried in Istanbul.

The German orientalist Otto Spies certified Güntekin's complete works, hardly anything of which was translated into German, with a clear style, captivating presentation and great skill in dealing with psychological problems. Everything he writes is “appealing, entertaining, light and fluid”, with “a desire to tell stories and analyze the characters”. Güntekin's first novel Çalıkuşu (1922), in German The Wren , remained his most successful work. The novel is set in the context of the First World War and a love story, but the main part is a cross-section of Ottoman society during the last years of the Ottoman Empire. The main character of the novel, the orphan and teacher Feride , who comes from a good family , leaves the home of her wealthy relatives in Istanbul after an exaggerated scene of jealousy. As a self-confident Turkish woman with a good education, she has the confidence to be able to face her life on her own. She moves from one Anatolian place to another as a teacher. The "wren" leaves each of these places on the first occasion to start again somewhere else, just as he left Istanbul on the first occasion. In this context u. a. emphasizes the arrears in Ottoman society. Translated into English by Sir Wyndham Deedes under the title The Autobiography of a Turkish Girl , Çalıkuşu was also published in London in 1949.

According to the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Turkey , Reşat Nuri Güntekin was a Freemason .
