Çalıkuşu (German: "Das Goldhähnchen ") is a Turkish novel by Reşat Nuri Güntekin from 1922. The novel has been filmed several times and u. a. translated into English . The novel takes a critical look at the social issues of its time.

Translated into English by Sir Wyndham Deedes under the title The Autobiography of a Turkish Girl , Çalıkuşu was published in London in 1949. The Russian edition, entitled Korolek , was translated by Igor Pechenev.

The novel is about a love relationship story, takes place at the time of the First World War and also depicts a cross-section of Ottoman society during the final years of the Ottoman Empire. The main character of the novel, the orphan and teacher Feride , who comes from a good family , leaves the home of her wealthy relatives in Istanbul after an exaggerated scene of jealousy. As a self-confident Turkish woman with a good education, she has the confidence to be able to face her life on her own. She moves from one Anatolian place to another as a teacher . The “wren” leaves each of these places on the first occasion to start again somewhere else, just as she left Istanbul on the first occasion. In this context u. a. emphasizes the arrears in Ottoman society.

Film adaptations

In 1966 the book was first made into a film by Osman F. Seden . The main roles were played by Türkan Şoray and Kartal Tibet . 1986 Osman F. Seden filmed the book again. This time as a TV series with Aydan Şener and Kenan Kalav in the leading roles.

In 2013 Çağan Irmak filmed the book as a TV series. The leading roles are occupied by Fahriye Evcen and Burak Özçivit .
