The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1993 began on April 18, 1993 and ended on June 9, 1993 with the 4-1 success of the Canadiens de Montréal over the Los Angeles Kings . The Canadiens won their 24th title in franchise history and placed goalkeeper Patrick Roy as the post-season Most Valuable Player, who was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy and was the fifth player in league history to receive this trophy for the second time. The losing Los Angeles Kings, however, were in their first Stanley Cup final and had the best scorer of the playoffs in their ranks in the person of Wayne Gretzky .

The Canadiens decided ten of their 16 wins in overtime , which was also a new record as 28 overtime games in the entire playoffs. Furthermore, Montréal was since 1979 (also Montréal) the first and in the further course also the last Stanley Cup winner, whose squad consisted exclusively of North Americans. In addition, the victory of Montreal represents the last Stanley Cup success of a Canadian team to date (as of playoffs 2019). In addition, the Edmonton Oilers missed the playoffs for the first time since they entered the NHL in 1979.

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner, the Canadiens de Montréal , traditionally had a total of 41 people, including 27 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Among them were the assistant coach Jacques Laperrière , the assistant to the general manager Jacques Lemaire and the vice-president Jean Béliveau, three former players who had won the cup many times. The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. Jesse Bélanger, who had only played 19 games in the regular season and nine playoff games, but was not used in the finals, benefited from an exception.

The 27 players in Montréal are made up of two goalkeepers, nine defenders and 16 attackers, including no European for the first time since 1979 . Oleg Petrov would have been the first Russian to be immortalized at the Stanley Cup, but his nine games in the regular season and one appearance in the playoffs were not enough for a mention. From the squad with which the Canadiens had last won the Cup in 1986, only Patrick Roy and Guy Carbonneau were there.
