Leonid Wolodymyrowytsch Uschkalow ( Ukrainian Леонід Володимирович Ушкалов ;. Scientific transliteration Leonid Volodymyrovyč Uškalov * 5. November 1956 in Krasnopillja , Sumy , Ukrainian SSR ; † 25. February 2019 in Kharkiv ) was a Ukrainian literary critic , writer and essayist . For his publications he mostly used the name spelling without a patronymic.

biography

Leonid Uschkalow studied from 1977 to 1982 at the philological faculty of the University of Kharkov . He then went on to become a scholar, doing his doctorate in 1989 with the study “The Work of Hryhorij Skovorodas and Ancient Culture”, and habilitated in 1996 with the thesis “The Ukrainian Baroque and its Relationship to Philosophy”. From 1995 he worked as a professor at the National Pedagogical Hryhorij Skovoroda University in Kharkiv . Uschkalow was married to the philologist Oleksandra, their son is the writer and literary scholar Oleksandr (Sascha) Uschkalow .

Uschkalov's research focuses on the work of the Ukrainian wandering philosopher Hryhorij Skoworoda and his literary-philosophical environment, i.e. the Baroque period, which was important for the cultural history of Ukraine. After numerous studies and essays on Skoworoda, Uschkalow published a comprehensive critical edition of the philosopher's work in 2010, which has since been reprinted twice. Uschkalov's essays have appeared in the Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Poland, Italy and Germany. He has repeatedly compiled his own essays and essays in essay volumes. In addition to the essay volumes, he has dedicated small monographs to individual great protagonists of the Ukrainian intellectual life of the Baroque period: Hryhorij Skoworoda, Taras Shevchenko , Hryhorij Kwitka-Osnovyanenko and Panas Myrnyj . In the meantime, a short literary history has emerged from his lectures. He is also involved in the latest 10-volume literary history of Ukraine. Most recently Uschkalow published a book for children and young people, Shevchenko from A to Z.
