Paul DiPietro (born September 8, 1970 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a former Swiss - Canadian ice hockey player and current coach of Italian descent.

Career

player

As a junior he played with the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League . In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft , the Montréal Canadiens selected him in the fifth round in 102nd place. At first he played in the AHL farm team of the Canadiens, the Fredericton Canadiens . In the 1991/92 season he made his debut in the NHL. After two seasons in which he commuted between the leagues, he made the breakthrough in the 1993/94 season after winning the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1993 . In 1995 he moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs ; here he had to go back to the various farm teams sporadically. Even a move to the Los Angeles Kings in the summer of 1996 did not bring him back the regular place he had hoped for.

He drew the consequences and moved to Europe. In the 1997/98 season he played for the Kassel Huskies in Germany. As by far the best scorer, he moved to HC Ambrì-Piotta in Switzerland after a year . He was also able to convince there. In 1999 he moved to EV Zug , where he played with a short break until the end of the 2010/11 season. He then moved to the National League B for HC Sierre . Due to the club's economic problems, DiPietro went on loan to the SCL Tigers during the 2011/12 season . His contract was unilaterally dissolved by HC Sierre in August 2012. In October DiPietro returned to HC Lugano, which signed him because of many injuries. His contract expired on December 24th. On January 3, 2013 it was announced that DiPietro was moving to EHC Olten with a contract until the end of the season. There he played another season and ended his playing career at the age of 44.

The native Canadian received his Swiss passport through the marriage of a Swiss woman . So it came about that he played for the Swiss national ice hockey team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . In the game against defending champions Canada DiPietro scored the two goals of the Swiss, which gave them an unexpected 2-0 victory.

Trainer

He worked as a talent scout at EV Zug and took care of the development of players, then he was assistant coach for the Swiss U19 and U20 national teams. In December 2019, DiPietro joined the staff of HC Lugano as an assistant to the newly appointed head coach Serge Pelletier .
