Curtis Michael Leschyshyn (born September 21, 1969 in Thompson , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1101 games for the Nordiques de Québec , Colorado Avalanche , Washington Capitals , Hartford Whalers , Carolina during his active career between 1985 and 2004 Hurricanes , Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators has contested in the National Hockey League on the position of fullback . Leschyshyn, who had already been selected in third overall position in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, celebrated his greatest career success in service of the Colorado Avalanche by winning the Stanley Cup in 1996 .
Career
Curtis Leschyshyn played two full seasons with the Saskatoon Blades in the Western Hockey League before he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1988 in the first round in third position overall by the Nordiques de Québec . For the Nordiques, he became a regular player in the National Hockey League in his first season as a professional . At the beginning of the 1995/96 NHL season , the franchise moved to Denver in the US state of Colorado and was henceforth called Colorado Avalanche . In the very first season in the new home, Leschyshyn and his team won the Stanley Cup .
After a total of nine seasons for the Québec / Colorado organization, the defender was transferred to the Washington Capitals on November 2, 1996 together with Chris Simon , while the Avalanche received winger Keith Jones and a first- and four-round draft pick for the NHL entry Draft 1998 . However, the Canadian only played two games for the Capitals before being transferred again a week after his arrival. Washington sent Leschyshyn to the Hartford Whalers and received striker Andrei Nikolischin in return . After a season in Hartford, he experienced another move of an ice hockey franchise; the Whalers settled in Raleigh , North Carolina and became the Carolina Hurricanes prior to the start of the 1997/98 season .
After three more seasons for the Canes Curtis Leschyshyn was selected in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft by the Minnesota Wild , where he played 54 games before he was on March 13, 2001 in exchange for a third-round draft pick for the 2001 NHL Entry Draft to the Ottawa Senators was sent.
After three more seasons in Ottawa and the lockout during the 2004/05 NHL season , the player signed a contract with the Colorado Avalanche on August 17, 2005; the franchise where he started his NHL career 17 years earlier. In Colorado, however, the defender did not play a game as he discovered during the pre-season that his physical condition was no longer sufficient for the NHL. Curtis Leschyshyn announced his retirement on October 3, 2005.
