Christopher J. "Chris" Simon (born January 30, 1972 in Wawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 857 games for the Nordiques de Québec , Colorado Avalanche , Washington Capitals , Chicago Blackhawks , New York Rangers , Calgary Flames , New York Islanders and Minnesota Wild played in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Simon celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Colorado Avalanche by winning the Stanley Cup in 1996 . During his time in the NHL, he was considered one of the toughest enforcers and most controversial players in the league due to numerous unsportsmanlike activities .
Career
The 1.91 m tall winger began his career with the Ottawa 67’s and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft as 25th in the second round by the Philadelphia Flyers .
Even before he played a single NHL game for the Flyers, the left shooter was transferred to the Nordiques de Québec along with other players in exchange for superstar Eric Lindros . At the end of 1996 he won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche , the successor to the Nordiques after the franchise had moved to Denver . After that season, however, he left the Avalanche for Washington Capitals .
In the 1997/98 season , Simon was accused of calling the then striker Mike Grier of the Edmonton Oilers a " nigger " during a game because of his African American origins . Although this incident could never be confirmed by a witness, Chris Simon was suspended from the NHL for three games. Simon also reached the Stanley Cup final with the capitals in the 1997/98 season , but there the Capitals were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings in four games. Via the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Rangers , the Canadian made it to the Calgary Flames in 2004 , where he also reached the Stanley Cup final, but this time lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning . In 2006 Chris Simon signed a contract with the New York Islanders as a free agent . At the end of February 2008, Simon moved to the Minnesota Wild . The New York Islanders received a six-round draft pick in return.
In the summer of 2008 he moved to Vitjas Chekhov in the newly founded Russian Continental Hockey League , where he was noticed in the opening game of the 2008/09 season by a game misconduct penalty. In December 2009 he returned to the USA for personal reasons, but from mid-January 2010 he returned to work with Vitjas. In January 2011, Simon was signed by OHK Dynamo until the end of the season. After the 2010/11 season, the Canadian was for some time without a club, in November 2011 he finally moved to Metallurg Novokuznetsk . In September of the following year, the now 40-year-old Simon extended his contract with Metallurg for a year before declaring his active career over in 2013.
Suspensions in 2007
During a game against rivals New York Rangers on March 8, 2007 at the Islanders Stadium Nassau Coliseum , Simon was checked face to face with the gang by Ryan Hollweg , for which he received no penalty, but Simon suffered a concussion . Seconds later, Simon hit his opponent in the face with his stick in revenge, after which the game was interrupted. Hollweg suffered a laceration on his chin, Simon received a match penalty . One day after the incident, Simon was suspended by the NHL for the remaining games of the season as well as the entire playoffs , with the minimum suspension duration being 25 games. In addition to the remaining 15 games of the season, the suspension could have added up to a total of 43 games if the Islanders had played the maximum number of 28 playoff games. After the Islanders were eliminated after five games, Simon had to serve five more games of his suspension at the beginning of the 2007/08 season . The suspension was the longest to date in the history of the NHL. The investigation against Simon for bodily harm has since been discontinued and Hollweg said he did not want to take legal action against Simon.
On December 15, 2007, Simon kicked Jarkko Ruutu of the Pittsburgh Penguins on the ground . Again Simon received a match penalty and two days later the New York Islanders announced that Simon was withdrawing from the game for the time being. On December 19, the NHL banned him for a total of 30 games, which was a new high for a ban in the history of the league. It was the eighth suspension for Simon in his career.
