Jarkko Samuli Ruutu (born August 23, 1975 in Vantaa ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was active for many years with the Vancouver Canucks , Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League . With the Finnish national team , he won several medals at ice hockey world championships . He is the older brother of Mikko and Tuomo Ruutu .

Career

Jarkko Ruutu began his professional ice hockey career in 1996 at HIFK Helsinki in the Finnish SM-liiga , after he had run through the youth teams at the same club and played for a year with the Michigan Technological University team. He was selected in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the third round as 68th by the Vancouver Canucks .

In the 1999/2000 season he made his NHL debut, but spent most of the season with the Canucks farm team , the Syracuse Crunch . In the following season he completed 21 games in the NHL, in which he scored three goals and taxed three assists . From season to season he was able to improve his statistics during his time in Vancouver, but he also spent many minutes in the penalty box. During the lockout season 2004/05 Ruutu played again for his hometown club HIFK and set a new league record for penalty minutes in the main round (with 215 penalty minutes), which was later broken by Matt Nickerson . For the 2005/06 season he returned to the Canucks. On the one hand, Jarkko Ruutu is known as the agitator of the team who cheers and carries the other players along - on the other hand, he is considered a tough player, which shows his penalty statistics. Nevertheless, in his last season in Vancouver he often played in the front row and also in power play because of his physical presence.

In July 2006, Ruutu signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins before moving to the Ottawa Senators as a free agent in July 2008 , with whom he signed a three-year contract for $ 3.9 million.

In the 2008/09 season Ruutu was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL after he had bitten his opponent Andrew Peters in the game against the Buffalo Sabers on January 6, 2009 . In February 2011, the Ottawa Senators gave him in exchange for a six- round vote in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft to the Anaheim Ducks . At the end of the 2010/11 season , the Californians did not extend his expiring contract, so Ruutu became a free agent. In September 2011 he returned to his homeland and was signed by Jokerit .

International

Jarkko Ruutu played at several world championships for his home country, also at the World Cup of Hockey . At the 2006 Winter Olympics , he won the silver medal with the Finnish national team . Four years later at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he won the bronze medal.
