Career

He spent a large part of his career in what was then the Soviet Union . First he played for HK Dynamo Moscow (1983 to 1989) and later for rival HK Spartak Moscow (1989 to 1992). In the 1987/88 season he scored 18 points (11 goals and 7 assists) in 37 games. Two years later he moved to Spartak Moscow. Here he continuously improved his values and led the team as the top scorer for three years in a row. In 1991 he was appointed to the then national ice hockey team. On November 7, 1991, he was in a game against Germany for the first time for the Sbornaja on the ice. His international career was crowned with a gold medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics . In the same year he was selected in the 4th round in 77th place in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs . Also in 1992 he was inducted into the " Russian Hockey Hall of Fame ".

His first season in the National Hockey League was extremely successful with 34 goals and 40 assists in 78 games for the Leafs. In the following season, however, he could no longer come close to these values. Injuries forced him to sit out in several games and yet he scored 14 goals and a total of 35 points in 45 games. The lockout season 1994/95 he spent partially back at Spartak Moscow and was then exchanged for Chris Bogas to the Calgary Flames .

In autumn 1995 he was on the ice for eight Flames games and a further twelve games for the Dallas Stars before ending his NHL career as a free agent and moving to the Cologne Sharks in the German Ice Hockey League at the end of the season . With them he became German runner- up in the 1995/96 season . From 1996 to 1998 he played again for Spartak and let his long career come to an end here.

In November 2009 he took over the post of head coach at Atlant Mytishchi from the Continental Hockey League . He led the team into the play-off round of 16 of the 2009/10 season . After a weak start to the season 2010/11 , Borschtschewski was relieved of his office in October 2010.
