The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1953 began on March 24, 1953 and ended on April 16, 1953 with the 4-1 victory of the Canadiens de Montréal against the Boston Bruins . In their third finals in a row, the Canadiens won their first title since 1946 and their seventh in franchise history . The Boston Bruins, meanwhile, played their first final since 1946, in which they were defeated Montréal with the same final score of 1: 4. In addition, Boston was the top scorer of these playoffs in the person of Ed Sandford .
mode
The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.
All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
