The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1958 began on March 25, 1958 and ended on April 20, 1958 with the 4-2 win of the Canadiens de Montréal over the Boston Bruins . The Canadiens won their third title in a row and the tenth in their franchise history . Previously, only the Toronto Maple Leafs managed to do this in the years 1947 to 1949, while the Canadiens were also the sole record winner of the Stanley Cup by overtaking the Maple Leafs (nine titles). In addition, the 1958 final marked the new edition of the previous year, in which the Bruins were defeated by 1: 4. In addition, the Bruins top scorer Fleming Mackell , while Montréal, Maurice Richard, had the post-season top scorer in their ranks.

mode

The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
