The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1927 began on March 29, 1927 and ended on April 13, 1927 with the Ottawa Senators' 2-0 victory over the Boston Bruins . The Senators won their tenth title, their fourth as a member of the NHL and also their last, as the franchise was moved to St. Louis in 1934 and dissolved a year later. The defeated Bruins, on the other hand, who provided the top scorers this post-season with Percy Galbraith and Harry Oliver , contested their first Stanley Cup final since they were founded in 1924.
The 1927 playoffs marked the first year in which only NHL teams competed for the Stanley Cup. The Western Hockey League , whose champions had competed in the final against the champions of the NHL in previous years, was dissolved in 1926.
mode
The three best teams from each division qualified for the playoffs. In the quarter-finals, the respective second and third faced each other within each division, before the winner from this pairing competed in the semi-finals against the division winner for a place in the final. In the final, the two best teams from both divisions met each other.
In the quarter and semi-final series, only two games were played, whereby only the goal difference to advance was taken into account, so that draws were also possible. The final was originally planned in the best-of-three mode, but the regulations did not yet provide for continuous overtime , so that the first game of the final ended in a draw after two ten minutes of overtime. League President Frank Calder then quickly changed the mode so that a maximum of five games should now be played, while the procedure of a maximum of 20 minutes of overtime was retained. Should the series be drawn after five games, the teams would have divided the championship. Continuous overtime was introduced the following year, so the Stanley Cup final in 1927 was the last in which a game ended without a winner ( apart from the power failure in 1988 ).
