The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1971 began on April 7, 1971 and ended on May 18, 1971 with the 4-3 win of the Canadiens de Montréal over the Chicago Black Hawks . The Canadiens won their 17th title in franchise history and also third in the last four years. They also had goalkeeper Ken Dryden, the Most Valuable Player awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy , and Frank Mahovlich, the top scorer of this post-season . The defeated Black Hawks, however, stood in their first Stanley Cup final since 1965, which they had lost with the same result against Montréal.

The Canadiens also became the first team since the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1945 to win the crucial seventh game of the Stanley Cup away from home. After them this, as well as catching up a 2-0 deficit in the final, only succeeded the Pittsburgh Penguins again in the 2009 playoffs .

mode

The four best teams from the Eastern and Western divisions qualified for the playoffs . In the quarter-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth on the seeding list faced each other within each division. The semi-finals were then - in contrast to previous years - played between the divisions, so the winner from 1 against 3 met the winner from 2 against 4 on the seeding list. This was followed by the Stanley Cup final. With this change and the change of the Black Hawks to the Western Division, the one-sidedness of the last three finals should be taken into account. In these, the St. Louis Blues , winners of the Western Division consisting only of teams from the 1967 expansion, lost 4-0 to the winners of the Eastern Division, which consisted only of teams from the Original Six .

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
