Ronald George "Ron" Stewart (born July 11, 1932 in Calgary , Alberta , † March 22, 2012 in Kelowna , British Columbia ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 1472 games during his playing career between 1949 and 1973 for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Boston Bruins , St. Louis Blues , New York Rangers , Vancouver Canucks and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . In service with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Stewart won the Stanley Cup three times in a row between 1962 and 1964 . In addition, the four-time participant in the NHL All-Star Game coached the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings in the NHL.
Career
Ron Stewart began his career as a hockey player in the Ontario Hockey Association , where he was active from 1949 to 1952 for the Toronto Marlboros , Barrie Flyers and Guelph Biltmores . In his final OHA year he won the triple with Guelph consisting of the J. Ross Robertson Cup , George Richardson Memorial Trophy and Memorial Cup . Then the attacker received a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs , for which he played the following 13 years in the National Hockey League and with which he won the Stanley Cup three times in a row in 1962 , 1963 and 1964 . In the summer of 1965 Stewart was given in exchange for the three players Orland Kurtenbach , Andy Hebenton and Pat Stapleton to the Boston Bruins , for which he spent another two seasons in the NHL.
After he had started the 1967/68 season with the St. Louis Blues, who had acquired him in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft , he moved to their league rivals New York Rangers during the season , for whom he was on the ice until 1971. Together with Stewart, Ron Attwell moved to New York, while Red Berenson and Barclay Plager moved to St. Louis in return . During his time in New York in 1970 there was an argument with his roommate and teammate Terry Sawchuk , in which Sawchuk was so badly injured that he died in hospital a few weeks later. In the 1971/72 season Stewart played after a change with Dave Balon and Wayne Connelly first for the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL, before he was sold again to the Rangers during the season, for whom he played until the end of the season as well as for their farm team who have favourited Providence Reds from the American Hockey League . With New York, the Canadian failed in the final games of the Stanley Cup at his ex-club Boston Bruins. In his last season, the 1972/73 season , Stewart was only used sporadically, where he was given to the New York Islanders during the year .
Following his career as a player, Stewart initially took over the post as head coach of the Portland Buckaroos from the Western Hockey League in the 1973/74 season , before winning the Calder Cup in 1975 with the Springfield Indians from the American Hockey League . For the 1975/76 season , the Canadian returned as a coach to the New York Rangers from the NHL, before ending his brief coaching career with the Los Angeles Kings in the 1977/78 season.
Stewart passed away in March 2012 at the age of 79 in Kelowna in the province of British Columbia .
