The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1963 began on March 26, 1963 and ended on 18 April 1963 with a 4: 1 victory of the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Detroit Red Wings . The Maple Leafs won their second title in a row and the eleventh in their franchise history . The defeated Red Wings, however, had Gordie Howe and Norm Ullman, the top scorers of the playoffs in their ranks, while Bobby Hull of the Chicago Black Hawks was the top scorer, although he only played five games.
In addition, the 1963 playoffs were the first since 1926 and the last to date in which no game was decided in overtime .
mode
The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.
All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
