The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1950 began on March 28, 1950 and ended on April 23, 1950 with the 4-3 win of the Detroit Red Wings against the New York Rangers . The Red Wings won their fourth title and the first since 1943 , when they had also contested the last all-American final (against Boston ). For the Rangers, who had the best scorer of the playoffs in their ranks in Pentti Lund , it was meanwhile the first participation in the final since 1940 .
Due to temporally conflicting events in their local Madison Square Garden , the Rangers played their "home games" of the final in the Maple Leaf Gardens of Toronto and thus on neutral ground. In addition, the rhythm of home and away games in both the semi-finals and the Stanley Cup final was changed due to this circumstance. Something similar had already been necessary in the 1932 final .
mode
The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.
All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
