The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 2010 began on April 14, 2010 and ended on June 9, 2010 with the 4-2 victory of the Chicago Blackhawks over the Philadelphia Flyers . The Blackhawks won their fourth Stanley Cup and their first since 1961 , while the Flyers came out of a Stanley Cup final as a loser for the sixth time in a row. Chicago's Jonathan Toews was honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player and was accepted into the Triple Gold Club as a 24th player with the Stanley Cup win , while the Flyers had the best scorer of the playoffs in their ranks in Daniel Brière . In addition, the Blackhawks won seven away games in a row and thus hold (together with three other teams) an NHL record.

The playoffs were marked by completely different courses of the two conferences . While in the final of the Western Conference with the San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks, the two seeded teams faced each other, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Canadiens de Montréal - seventh and eighth on the seeding list - contested the final in the Eastern Conference . Since the introduction of the playoff format in 1994, the lowest-seeded team was in the final of the Eastern Conference for the first time (in 2006 the Edmonton Oilers succeeded in the same in the West); also in this pairing had home rights for the first time a team seeded at seven. In addition, the Philadelphia Flyers succeeded as the third team in the history of the NHL to convert a 0-3 deficit in a series into a 4-3 victory (Conference semifinals against the Boston Bruins ). Previously only the Toronto Maple Leafs ( 1942 ) and the New York Islanders ( 1975 ) managed to do this .

mode

After the three division winners and the five other most points teams have qualified the Conference of each conference, start the knock-out system discharged playoffs . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. In addition, it ends with the first goal ( Sudden Death ) and not, as usual in the regular season, with a shootout .
