Sami Sakari Salo (born September 2, 1974 in Turku ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and current coach . The defender played 980 games for the Ottawa Senators , Vancouver Canucks and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League between 1992 and 2014 . With the Finnish national team , Salo took part in four Winter Olympics, winning one silver and two bronze medals.
Career
Sami Salo started his career in the 1994/95 season with the TPS ice hockey club in the Finnish SM-liiga . After three seasons he moved to Jokerit , where he played one season. He was selected in the ninth round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft as the 239th player by the Ottawa Senators . In the 1998/99 season he then moved to the NHL for the Ottawa Senators. After four more seasons, Salo moved to the Vancouver Canucks . During the NHL lockout in the 2004/05 season he played for the Swedish club Frölunda HC and then returned to Vancouver. After ten years with the Vancouver Canucks, Salo signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in July 2012 .
Most recently, Salo was on the ice in the 2013-14 season when he completed 71 appearances for the Tampa Bay Lightning. In October 2014 he underwent an operation on his wrist , as a result of which he missed the entire 2014/15 season and declared his active career over in August 2015.
International
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , Salo played for the Finnish national team and won the silver medal. Four years later at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he won the bronze medal. He also won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team at the 2014 Olympic Games.
