John Paul "Johnny" Boychuk (born January 19, 1984 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League since October 2014 . The defender had previously spent six years with the Boston Bruins and won the Stanley Cup with the team in 2011 .
Career
Johnny Boychuk began his career as a hockey player in the Western Hockey League , in which he was active from 1999 to 2004 for the Calgary Hitmen and Moose Jaw Warriors . During this time he was selected in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as a total of 61st player from the Colorado Avalanche .
Initially, however, the defender played one season each for their farm teams from the American Hockey League , the Hershey Bears , Lowell Lock Monsters and Albany River Rats , from 2004 to 2007 before the right- shooter made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2007/08 season for Colorado there. For the Avalanche he was on the ice in a total of four games this season, in which he remained free of points and punishment. The Canadian spent most of the season with their new AHL farm team, the Lake Erie Monsters .
On June 24, 2008 Boychuk was given in exchange for Matt Hendricks to the Boston Bruins , for which he was only once in the NHL on the ice in the 2008/09 season . The rest of the time he spent with their AHL farm team, the Providence Bruins . There he was elected to the league's First All-Star Team at the end of the season and received the Eddie Shore Award for best defender. The Canadian then established himself in the Bruins' NHL squad and won the Stanley Cup with the team in the 2011 playoffs .
After six years in Boston, the Bruins gave it to the New York Islanders in October 2014 in order to keep the salary cap . The Islanders transferred two second-round voting rights for him to the 2015 and 2016 NHL Entry Drafts, as well as an optional third-round voting right for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
International
For Canada Boychuk took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2002 , where he finished sixth with his team.
