Matthew "Matt" Hendricks (born June 17, 1981 in Blaine , Minnesota ) is a retired American ice hockey player . The center played over 600 games for six teams in the National Hockey League between 2009 and 2019 , most of them for the Washington Capitals and Edmonton Oilers . In addition, he led the USA national team as captain to the bronze medal at the 2015 World Cup .
Career
Matt Hendricks began his career as a hockey player on the St. Cloud State University team , for which he was active from 2000 to 2004. As a high school player, he was previously selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in the fifth round as the 131st player of the Nashville Predators from the National Hockey League , but was not signed.
Instead, the attacker made his professional ice hockey debut in the 2003-04 season when he was on the ice in a game for the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League . In the following season he ran mainly for the Florida Everblades in the ECHL , but played in parallel for the Lowell Lock Monsters from the AHL. After a year with Rochester Americans , Hendricks got a contract with the then Calder Cup winner Hershey Bears for the 2006/07 season . With the Bears he also reached the finals for the championship of the AHL, but failed with his team in the best-of-seven series with 1: 4 at the Hamilton Bulldogs . He then signed a contract with the Boston Bruins as a free agent on July 9, 2007 , but was only used for their AHL farm team Providence Bruins .
On June 24, 2008, the Bruins gave him in exchange for Johnny Boychuk to the Colorado Avalanche . In the 2008/09 season , the American scored a total of 29 scorer points in 43 games for Colorado's AHL farm team, the Lake Erie Monsters . In his rookie year in the National Hockey League , he received 13 penalty minutes in four games. At the beginning of the 2009/10 season , Hendricks was appointed to the Colorado NHL squad. After the striker established himself in the league, he was signed by the Washington Capitals in the summer of 2010 . For the capital club he went on the ice in the following three seasons.
In July 2013, Hendricks signed a four-year deal worth $ 7.4 million with the Nashville Predators . The average annual salary was $ 1.85 million. In January 2014 Hendricks was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers , who in return gave goalkeeper Devan Dubnyk to Nashville. After the four-year contract expired in summer 2017, the American became a free agent again, whereupon he was signed by the Winnipeg Jets in August 2017 . As a result, his expiring contract was not renewed, so he signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Wild in July 2018 . In February 2019, the Jets brought the attacker back into the organization in exchange for a seven-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . There he played four games by the end of the season and then declared his active career over. In total, the center had completed 646 NHL games and recorded 118 scorer points. At the same time it was announced that he was moving to the management of Minnesota Wild.
International
Hendricks made his international debut at the 2015 World Cup and won the bronze medal with the United States national team . At the 2016 World Cup , he was also part of Team USA and reached fourth place with the team. In both tournaments he led the team as captain .
