Semjon Alexandrowitsch Varlamov ( Russian Семён Александрович Варламов ; English transcription: Semyon Aleksandrovich Varlamov ; born April 27, 1988 in Kujbyshev , Russian SFSR ) is a Russian ice hockey goalkeeper . Since July 2019 he has been playing for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League . With the Russian national team he won the gold medal at the 2012 World Cup .
Career
Semjon Varlamow grew up in Samara, Russia, and learned to play ice hockey there. He switched to Lokomotive Yaroslavl and was able to draw attention to himself there with outstanding achievements.
In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , Varlamov was selected in the first round in a total of 23rd position by the Washington Capitals . On July 11, 2007, the Russian signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Capitals. At the beginning of the 2008/09 season, Varlamov decided to move to North America. He was mainly used for Washington's Hershey Bears farm team . The goalkeeper played his first game in the National Hockey League on December 13, 2008 in a game between the Capitals and the Montréal Canadiens . In total, Varlamov came to six NHL appearances during the regular season. In the 2009 play-offs, he ousted José Théodore as Washington's goalkeeper. The Russian played a total of 13 play-off games, with two shutouts .
The 2009/10 NHL season began Varlamov as the second goalkeeper behind Théodore. After suffering a groin injury, he was sent to the Hershey Bears to collect game practice after his injury. In March 2010, the Capitals brought him back into their squad. In the 2010 finals, Théodore again lost his regular place to Varlamov and did not receive a new contract. In the 2010/11 season was Michal Neuvirth presented as goalkeeper of the capital. Varlamow played 27 regular season games this season, but was only Washington's third goalkeeper after Neuvirth and Braden Holtby after another groin injury .
On July 1, 2011, he was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche in a barter for a first-round franchise in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round franchise in the 2012 or 2013 Entry Draft . In Colorado, the Russian subsequently developed into the undisputed goalkeeper. Due to the NHL lockout , he was active in the fall of 2012 for Lokomotive Yaroslavl from the Continental Hockey League .
In early July 2019, he signed a four-year free agent contract with the New York Islanders , which should earn him an average annual salary of five million US dollars.
International
Semyon Varlamov represented the Russian national team for the first time at the U18 Junior World Championships in 2005 and 2006 . With the U20 national team, he also took part in the U20 Junior World Championships in 2006 and 2007 . In both U20 competitions, Varlamov won the silver medal.
For Russia's men's national team, he took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics, but was only the third goalkeeper behind Yevgeny Nabokow and Ilya Brysgalow and was not used. At the subsequent World Cup in 2010 he won the silver medal with the Russian team after losing to the Czech team in the final and played five games. As a result, he became world champion with the Sbornaya 2012 , although Varlamov did not lose any of his eight games before making his debut at the 2014 Olympics . He also represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
