Brock Nelson (born October 15, 1991 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been with the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League since April 2012 .
Career
Brock Nelson began his career on the school team at Warroad High School , for which he was on the ice for three seasons. After scoring 73 points in 25 games for his school in the 2009-10 season, he was named to the Great Plains high school selection and played there for the remainder of the season. Overall, he finished the season as the fourth best scorer in the American high school system. In the NHL Entry Draft 2010 he was then selected in the first round in 30th position by the New York Islanders .
Nelson then moved to the University of North Dakota and played for the university's ice hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . In his debut season he won the championship in the WCHA with the team. In the following season Nelson finally achieved the breakthrough with 47 points from 42 games and he was appointed to the Third All-Star Team of the WCHA. At the same time he helped the team to defend their title in the WCHA championship.
After the end of the season he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New York Islanders and moved permanently to the Islanders' farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in the American Hockey League for the 2012/13 season . With 52 points from 66 games, he immediately became the team's top scorer and also finished second in the league in the rookie scorer ranking behind Ryan Spooner . Nelson also set a new rook record for the Sound Tigers with 25 goals. On May 11, 2013, the center also made his debut for the Islanders in the National Hockey League in the play-off game against the Pittsburgh Penguins .
In the 2013/14 season Brock Nelson was permanently in the NHL roster of the New York Islanders and completed 72 games in the regular season . When John Tavares was out with an injury in February 2014, Nelson briefly moved up to the first line of attack by the Islanders.
After having achieved his best career record to date with 53 scorer points in the 2018/19 season, he signed a new six-year contract in New York in May 2019, which from now on should bring him an average annual salary of six million US dollars.
International
Nelson represented the USA for the first time at the 2011 U20 World Junior Championship and won the bronze medal with the team. He was appointed to the men's national team for the first time at the 2014 World Cup in Minsk , as well as at the 2015 World Cup , where he won the bronze medal and was the top scorer of his team with 10 points. At the 2016 World Cup , he joined the team late due to the playoff participation with the Islanders and subsequently took fourth place with the team.
