Nick Leddy (born March 20, 1991 in Eden Prairie , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League since October 2014 . The defender had previously spent four years with the Chicago Blackhawks and won the Stanley Cup with the team in 2013 .
Career
Nick Leddy played ice hockey with the Eden Prairie Eagles , the high school team of Eden Prairie High School , in the United States high school league system from 2006 to 2009 during his junior years . After completing his high school career, Leddy won the annual Minnesota Mr. Hockey award , which honors the best high school player in the US state of Minnesota , in calendar year 2009 . He was then selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in 16th position by the Minnesota Wild . He spent the 2009/10 season at the University of Minnesota and played for their ice hockey team, the Golden Gophers , in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In February 2010, the Minnesota Wild gave his NHL rights and Kim Johnsson to the Chicago Blackhawks off to Cam Barker to acquire.
In July 2010 Leddy signed his first professional contract with the Blackhawks, which was valid for three years. On October 7, 2010, he made his debut playing against the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League . Four days later, Leddy scored his first goal in the NHL when he beat Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabers with a flat wrist shot. On October 17, 2010 he was sent to the farm team at the Rockford IceHogs in the American Hockey League , for which he was then regularly used. In January 2011 Leddy was called back to the Blackhawks' NHL squad.
After four years in Chicago (and winning the Stanley Cup in 2013), the Blackhawks handed him over to the New York Islanders in October 2014 to meet the salary cap . In return, the Islanders transferred Ville Pokka , TJ Brennan and the rights to Anders Nilsson to Chicago.
International
Leddy represented his home country at the 2011 U20 World Junior Championship and won the bronze medal.
