Terrance James "TJ" Brennan (born April 3, 1989 in Willingboro , New Jersey ) is an American ice hockey player on the position of defender . He has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks from the National Hockey League since February 2020 and works for their farm team , the Rockford IceHogs from the American Hockey League .
Career
TJ Brennan began his career in a sub-class junior league in the state of Pennsylvania before moving to the St. John's Fog Devils in 2006 in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , one of Canada's three top junior leagues. In his rookie season 2006/07 he was able to establish himself immediately as an attacking defender in the team with 16 goals and 41 points and was finally awarded the Trophée Raymond Lagacé as the best defensive rookie in the league. In the NHL Entry Draft 2007 he was selected in the second round at a total of 31st position by the Buffalo Sabers .
In the following season, the defender was able to repeat his point scoring exactly, but with a plus / minus balance of -15, he also showed weaknesses in the defensive area. After the St. John's Fog Devils was relocated to Montreal at the end of the season, Brennan also moved to the new team, which was called Club de hockey junior de Montréal . There he spent another season in which he was able to increase both the number of his templates and his plus / minus balance. However, the defender only scored five goals in the season.
In April 2009 Brennan signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabers and then moved to the Portland Pirates , the Sabers' farm team, in the American Hockey League for the 2009/10 season . After he had earned a regular place in the Pirates squad at the end of the season, he also improved his offensive statistics in the following season and scored 15 goals in a total of 72 appearances in 2010/11. He also won the Emile Francis Trophy with the Pirates as the best team in the Atlantic Division , but the team failed in the second round of the play-offs. The 2011/12 season began TJ Brennan initially with the new AHL partner of the Sabers, the Rochester Americans . In November 2011 he was finally called up to the NHL roster of the Buffalo Sabers and made his debut against the Boston Bruins . The defender also scored his first NHL goal when he scored the 3-1 with a slap shot . During the lockout in the NHL, which delayed the start of the next season until January 2013, Brennan initially continued to play in Rochester and was appointed assistant captain. Brennan was able to achieve 35 scorer points in 36 missions, making him the second best scorer among the league's defenders. At the same time he was also the Americans' most successful defender scorer with 14 goals.
On March 15, 2013, Brennan was given to the Florida Panthers in exchange for a five-round vote in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft . In June 2013, the Panthers transferred him to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Bobby Butler . In July 2013, he signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs . In September 2013, Brennan was then transferred to the AHL farm team, the Toronto Marlies .
After the 2013-14 season, Brennan left Toronto and joined the New York Islanders as a free agent . He did not play a competitive game there, however, before the Islanders received Nick Leddy from the Chicago Blackhawks in October 2014 and in return transferred Brennan, Ville Pokka and Anders Nilsson to Chicago. The Blackhawks gave Brennan to their AHL farm team, the Rockford IceHogs , on the same day . After half a year in Chicago, Brennan returned to Toronto in February 2015 and plays there again for the Marlies; the Blackhawks received Spencer Abbott in return . In the 2015/16 season he received the Eddie Shore Award for the AHL's best defender for the second time and was again elected to the AHL First All-Star Team . His expiring contract in Toronto was not extended, so he joined the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent in July 2016 . They also used the defender in the AHL at the Lehigh Valley Phantoms , so that at the end of the season he was appointed to the AHL First All-Star Team for the third time.
After almost three and a half years in the organization of the flyers, Brennan was handed over to the Chicago Blackhawks for the trade deadline in February 2020 , who in return sent Nathan Noel to Philadelphia.
