Ville Pokka (born June 3, 1994 in Tornio ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League since May 2018 .
Career
Pokka went through the youth department of his home club Tornion IHC up to the C-Juniors . He then moved to Oulun Kärpät . From his junior forge, the defender made the leap into the first team in 2010, which was based in the SM-liiga . For the 2011/12 season he secured a regular place in the squad there. In the summer of 2012, which ensured New York Islanders in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , the rights to his person in the second round 34th.
Pokka remained in Oulu until the summer of 2014 and developed into a leading player in the team. In his senior year with the team, he celebrated winning the Finnish championship with Oulu and also won the Matti Keinonen trophy . In May he finally signed a contract with the Islanders. Before he appeared for New York, however, he was handed over to the Chicago Blackhawks in October 2014 , which also received TJ Brennan and the transfer rights to goalkeeper Anders Nilsson as part of the transfer business . In return, Nick Leddy moved to New York. The Blackhawks immediately sent Pokka to the American Hockey League after the transfer , where Pokka plays for their farm team, Rockford IceHogs . At the end of the 2014/15 season he was appointed to the AHL All-Rookie Team .
After three and a half years in the organization of the Blackhawks, in which he had no appearance in the NHL, Pokka was given to the Ottawa Senators in February 2018 in exchange for Christopher DiDomenico .
After four years in North America, in which he remained without an NHL appearance, Pokka decided to return to Europe in May 2018 and joined the HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League .
International
At the international level, Pokka played in numerous tournaments for his home country. During his junior years, he competed in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 , the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 , the U18 Junior World Championships in 2011 and 2012, and the U20 Junior World Championships in 2012 , 2013 and 2014 . The only medal win he could celebrate with the juniors was winning the U20 World Junior Championship in 2014.
In the senior division, the defender was part of the squad at the 2016 World Cup in Russia . There he won the silver medal with the Finnish team. Because of his achievements, Pokka was also appointed to the Finnish squad at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey .
