Anders Nilsson (born March 19, 1990 in Luleå ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League since January 2019 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2018 World Cup . His father Peder Nilsson and his brother Jens Nilsson were also professional ice hockey players.
Career
Anders Nilsson began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Luleå HF , for whose professional team he made his debut in the Elitserien in the 2008/09 season . In his only appearance, the goalkeeper remained clean in 28 minutes. In the following season he was in 27 games for Luleå between the posts and had a goal average of 2.65. In the 2010/11 season he was able to improve again and allowed an average of only 1.92 goals per game in the main round, which was the best value of all Elitserien goalkeepers. His catch quota was 91.8 percent. In the playoffs he led his team into the semifinals, where he was able to improve his catch rate to 93.1 percent and achieved a goal average of 1.96 per game. He was one of the best goalkeepers in the league in the playoffs.
In the KHL Junior Draft 2011 Nilsson was selected in the first round as the tenth player from HK Dinamo Minsk . In May 2011 he signed a contract with the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League , which had selected him in the third round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft as a 62nd player. He then moved to the organization of the Islanders and was mostly used by them with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the American Hockey League (AHL). It was not until the 2013/14 season that he established himself as the Islanders' second goalkeeper behind Yevgeny Nabokow . After the 2013/14 season, his contract, which he had signed with the Islanders in 2011, expired and Nilsson received a lucrative offer from Ak Bars Kazan from the Continental Hockey League that he accepted at the end of May 2014.
In his first KHL season, Nilsson reached the final of the Gagarin Cup with Kazan and recorded the lowest goals against (1.54) as well as the most shuouts (6) in the playoffs, but still had to defeat SKA Saint Petersburg 1: 4 give. In addition, he was elected to the KHL First All-Star Team after the season .
In July 2015, the Chicago Blackhawks , who had acquired the NHL rights to him in October 2014 from the Islanders, gave these rights to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Liam Coughlin . A few days later, the Oilers announced that they had agreed on a one-year contract with Nilsson.
In February 2016, however, Nilsson was given to the St. Louis Blues , with the Oilers receiving young goalkeeper Niklas Lundström and a five-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . Immediately after the commitment, the Blues sent Nilsson to the AHL to the Chicago Wolves . The Blues responded by signing Brian Elliott's injury .
After the 2015/16 season, Nilsson moved to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for a five-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , who provided him with a one-year contract. This was not subsequently extended, so the Swede joined the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent in July 2017 . The Swede spent about one and a half seasons there before he and Darren Archibald were handed over to the Ottawa Senators in January 2019 . In return, Mike McKenna , Tom Pyatt and a six- round right to vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft moved to Vancouver. At the end of the current season, he then signed a new two-year contract in Ottawa, which should bring him an average annual salary of 2.6 million US dollars.
International
For Sweden , Nilsson took part in the junior division of the 2010 U20 World Youth Championship , where he and his team won the bronze medal. In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad for the first time at the 2011 World Cup . During the tournament in which Sweden won the silver medal, he remained as a substitute goalkeeper without use.
His next appearance on the international stage was the 2014 World Cup , where he established himself as the goalkeeper of Tre Kronor and won the bronze medal with the national team. Four years later, the gold medal followed at the 2018 World Cup , with Nilsson leading all the goalkeepers in the tournament in shutouts (3), catch rate (95.4%) and goals against goals (1.09) and therefore also elected to the All-Star team of the World Cup has been.
