Michael "Mike" Reilly junior (born July 13, 1993 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League since January 2020 .
Career
youth
Mike Reilly was born in Chicago, but grew up in Chanhassen , Minnesota . His father, Michael "Mike" Reilly senior, was selected in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft in 140th position by the Canadiens de Montréal , but was never active in the professional field. In addition to Mike Reilly Jr., he has four other children, all of whom have played ice hockey at least at college level. Mike Reilly junior attended the Academy of Holy Angels and Shattuck-St. Mary's School and played for their ice hockey teams in regional high school leagues until 2011. In the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 98th position. For the 2011/12 season, the defender moved to the Penticton Vees from the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) in Penticton, Canada . As a rookie, he led all defenders in goals (24), assists (59) and scorer points (83) and was therefore appointed to the league's all-rookie team . With the Vees he also became champion of the BCHL and a little later won the Doyle Cup .
University of Minnesota
In the fall of 2012, Reilly enrolled at the University of Minnesota to begin a degree in economics and at the same time participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) game with their ice hockey team, the Minnesota Golden Gophers . As a freshman , the defender scored 14 points in 37 games, taking part in the U20 World Cup in 2013 with the U20 national team of his home country over the turn of the year, where he won the gold medal. In the following season, Reilly increased his personal statistics significantly and at the end of the season was elected to the First All-Star Team and Defensive Player of the Year of the Big Ten Conference . The American received both awards the following year, in which he was also the champion of the Big Ten Conference with the Golden Gophers . He was also one of ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best college player in the country. After he first represented the senior team of the United States when he in the squad of Team USA at the World Cup in 2015 was one and there won the bronze medal.
NHL
Four years after the Columbus Blue Jackets had selected him in the NHL Entry Draft, their player rights to him lapsed, so the Minnesota Wild were able to sign him in July 2015, with another nine franchises of the National Hockey League (NHL) showing interest in the defender. As expected, the Minnesota Wild sent him to their farm team , the Iowa Wild , in the American Hockey League (AHL). There he played until January 2016, when he was first called into the NHL squad and made his debut for the Minnesota Wild a little later. By the end of the season Reilly changed regularly between AHL and NHL, where he completed a total of 29 NHL and 45 AHL appearances in the season.
In February 2018, the Wild gave him to the Canadiens de Montréal for the trade deadline and in return received a five-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . Also in exchange for a five-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2021 and the attacker Andrew Sturtz , he moved to the Ottawa Senators in January 2020 after almost two years in Montréal .
