Bohdan Sylwestrowytsch Lepkyj ( Ukrainian Богдан Сильвестрович Лепкий ; born November 9, 1872 in Krywenke , Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; † July 21, 1941 in Cracow , Generalgouvernement , German Reich ) was a Ukrainian writer , literary scholar and artist .

Life

Lepkyj was born in the village of Kryvenke (today in Chortkiv district of the Ukrainian oblast of Ternopil ). He studied at the universities of Lemberg , Vienna and Cracow and then taught at a grammar school in Bereschany between 1895 and 1899 and then from 1899 at the University of Cracow. During the First World War he taught at the University of Vienna, from 1921 to 1926 he lived in Berlin and then taught again until 1939, from 1932 on as a professor of Ukrainian literature at the University of Cracow. In 1938/39 he was a member of the Polish Senate .

He made his debut as a writer in 1895, as such he was inspired by the writers Ivan Franko , Mykola Woronyj (ukr. Микола Кіндратович Вороний ) and Wassyl Schchurat (ukr. Василь Григорович ) Щур . In 1906 he was, along with Wassyl Patschowskyj and Petro Karmanskyj , a founding member of the modern literary group " Young Muse " (Moloda Musa). He died in Kraków in 1941 and was buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery.
