Thomas Chabot (born January 30, 1997 in Sainte-Marie , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League since September 2016 and plays for them in the position of defender .
Career
Chabot first played for various youth teams in the province of Québec , before joining the Saint John Sea Dogs in the summer of 2013 via the entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . There the defender played for three years and was selected during this time in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in 18th overall position by the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League .
On September 30, 2016, the defender finally signed a three-year NHL entry contract with the Senators. Thanks to his good performance in the pre-season training camp, he earned a place in the Ottawa squad at the beginning of the 2016/17 season and finally celebrated his competitive debut on October 18, 2016. After this one NHL mission, however, the Senators sent him back to the Sea Dogs in the LHJMQ in early November to allow the defender to continue playing. There he won the championship of the LHJMQ and thus the Coupe du Président at the end of the season , where he led the league in the plus / minus statistics (+29) and all defenders in points (23) in the playoffs and subsequently with the Trophée Guy Lafleur was recognized as the most valuable player of the post-season . In addition, he was honored with the Trophée Émile Bouchard as best defender, with the Trophée Paul Dumont as Personality of the Year and with the inclusion in the LHJMQ First All-Star Team. A little later he was also named CHL Defender of the Year by the Canadian Hockey League , the umbrella organization for the three major Canadian junior leagues .
At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Chabot was mainly used for the Senators in the NHL, parallel to a few missions for their farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Belleville Senators . At the beginning of the 2018/19 season he finally established himself in the NHL and, with 55 scorer points, became by far the strongest defensive player in the team. As a result, he received a new eight-year contract in Ottawa in September 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of eight million US dollars from the start of the 2020/21 season.
International
Chabot represented his home country at the U18 World Junior Championships in 2015 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2016 and 2017 . He won the bronze medal at the U18 Junior World Championship and silver at the 2017 U20 Junior World Championship. He was also named the tournament's most valuable player and best defender, as well as being named to the All-Star Team.
Chabot made his debut for the senior national team at the 2018 World Cup , where he finished fourth with the team. A year later he won the silver medal with the team.
