Ronald Martin "Ron" Hainsey (born March 24, 1981 in Bolton , Connecticut ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Ottawa Senators from the National Hockey League since July 2019 . With the Pittsburgh Penguins , the defender won the Stanley Cup in the 2017 playoffs .
Career
Hainsey initially spent his junior years between 1997 and 1999 in the US National Team Development Program of the US ice hockey association USA Hockey . For the association's sponsorship teams, the defender played in the North American Hockey League and United States Hockey League . After retiring from the program, Hainsey enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Lowell . There he played alongside his studies for the ice hockey team in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After his first year of college, which he completed with the election to the all-rookie team of Hockey East, the defender was chosen during the NHL Entry Draft 2000 by the Montréal Canadiens as a total of 13th player in the first round.
After another year at university, the American ended his college career prematurely when he signed his first professional contract in the Canadiens franchise in the spring of 2001 . He then played in the American Hockey League for the Canadiens' farm team , the Québec Citadelles , and at the beginning of the 2002/03 season - since the Canadiens had changed partners - for the Hamilton Bulldogs . For the Canadiens, the defender ran a total of 32 times between 2002 and 2004 and scored two points , including one goal. After he had spent due to the lockout of the NHL season 2004/05 both this and the beginning of the following season in Hamilton, he was committed on November 29, 2005 on the waiver list of the Columbus Blue Jackets . In the Blue Jackets, the defensive player finally made his breakthrough in the NHL and was a fixture in the squad until the end of the 2007/08 season .
After his contract expired at the end of the season, Hainsey signed on July 2, 2008 as a free agent a five-year contract worth 22.5 million US dollars with the Atlanta Thrashers . He completed three successful seasons for the Thrashers before the franchise was relocated and started playing as Winnipeg Jets at the beginning of the 2011/12 season . With the Jets, Hainsey fulfilled his five-year contract. The Jets refrained from any further obligation of the now 32-year-old, so that he found a new employer for the 2013/14 game year in the Carolina Hurricanes in September 2013 . In the summer of 2014, the Hurricanes finally extended the expiring contract by three years. The contract was worth $ 8.5 million. In the final year of his contract, the defender was transferred from Carolina to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2017 . The Penguins exchanged Danny Kristo and a second-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft to Carolina. In return, the Hurricanes also took over half of their ex-player's salary.
With the Penguins, Hainsey took part in the first NHL playoffs of his career and won the Stanley Cup directly with the team . Just a few weeks after the success, he left the Penguins again and joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent . In their jersey he completed his 1000th game of the regular season in the NHL a little later. In early July 2019, Hainsey signed a one-year contract with the Ottawa Senators .
International
For the United States , Hainsey took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championships in 1999 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2000 and 2001 . The best result was a fourth place at the U20 Junior World Championship in 2000. The 2001 U20 Junior World Championship was completed by the defender with five assists, making him the most productive player in his position in the course of the tournament.
With the men's selection, he took part in the 2009 World Cup in Switzerland . Although he was able to convince there with six scorer points from nine games, he was denied a medal win after defeats in the semi-finals and a game for third place. During the tournament, Hainsey acted as assistant captain .
