The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 2017 began on April 12, 2017 and ended on June 11, 2017 with the Pittsburgh Penguins' 4-2 victory over the Nashville Predators . The Penguins as the reigning Stanley Cup winners became the first team since the Detroit Red Wings in 1998 that could defend the title; overall it was her fifth success. In addition, they put in Evgeni Malkin not only the top scorer of the playoffs, but had in Sidney Crosby also with the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the post-season in their ranks. Crosby also defended this title, which Mario Lemieux had last achieved in 1991 and 1992 (also for the Penguins). The defeated Nashville Predators were in their first Stanley Cup final in franchise history and at the same time became the first in 16th and lowest seeded team to reach the final. In addition, Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh) and Peter Laviolette (Nashville) faced each other as head coach for the first time in league history.

The Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs for the first time since 1990, ending the longest active series and the third longest series in league history of 25 consecutive playoff appearances. Opposite are the Edmonton Oilers , who qualified for the post-season for the first time since 2006 and were thus able to finish the longest series of ten missed playoffs in a row. So they set the negative record of the Florida Panthers (2001-2011). In the first round of the playoffs, 18 of the 42 matches were decided in overtime , which was a new record (previously 17; playoffs 2013 ). However, for the first time since 2001, none of the eight first-round series went the full distance of seven games.

mode

After the three teams with the highest points and the two wild card teams of the respective conference have qualified from each division, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . In the first round, the division winners meet the wild card teams of the respective conference, whereby the division winner with the most points meets the worse of the two wild card teams. The remaining pairings of the Conference quarter-finals will be played within the division among the teams that placed second and third.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. In addition, it ends with the first goal ( Sudden Death ) and not, as usual in the regular season, with a shootout .
