Josh Archibald (born October 6, 1992 in Regina , Saskatchewan ) is an American ice hockey player of Canadian origin who has been under contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League since July 2019, where he plays in the position of right winger . With the Pittsburgh Penguins , the right winger won the Stanley Cup in 2017 .
Career
youth
Josh Archibald was born in Regina, but when he was 15 he moved with his family to Brainerd , Minnesota , his mother's home. There he attended Brainerd High School and ran parallel for their ice hockey team in a regional high school league. In the 2011/12 season, the right winger scored 73 points in just 25 games and was therefore considered in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in 174th position by the Pittsburgh Penguins . Archibald then enrolled in the fall of 2011 at the University of Nebraska Omaha and from then on took part in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) with their team, the Mavericks . During his college days, the attacker distinguished himself as a regular goalscorer and increased his personal statistics from year to year to 29 goals and 14 assists in the 2013/14 season. In recognition of these achievements, he was named Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) and was voted into their First All-Star Team . He was also one of ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award , which honors the best college player in the country.
NHL
Archibald then signed an entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in May 2014 and, by the end of the season, played his first nine professional games for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the American Hockey League (AHL), the Pittsburgh farm team . He also spent most of the 2014/15 season in Wilkes-Barre / Scranton, but was also sent to the third-class ECHL for nine missions with the Wheeling Nailers . As a result, the attacker stabilized his performance in the AHL and finally made his debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League (NHL) in March 2016 . In the 2016/17 season Archibald won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh and came to play in game four of the final series , so that his name was immortalized on the trophy. In the summer of 2017, he signed a new two-year contract with the Penguins.
Nevertheless, Archibald subsequently no longer played a role in the Penguins' NHL roster and was therefore handed over to the Arizona Coyotes in December 2017 along with Sean Maguire and a six- round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the Penguins received Michael Leighton and a four-round vote for the same draft. With the Coyotes, Archibald then established himself in the NHL. In the summer of 2019, the attacker switched to the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent on the basis of a one-year contract .
International
Archibald has dual citizenship through his American mother and Canadian father and decided to accrue for the United States . He represented them in the junior division with the U20 national team at the U20 World Cup in 2012 , where he finished seventh with the team.
